Hello everyone!

Bonjour à tous!

I hope you're all enjoying the spring settling in.

My work in the side garden is way late for two reasons: my new job takes a lot of what should be my personnal time and I've been sick, meaning I'm very tired and back to that dreaded no-fiber no-fun diet. Hopefully it won't last for two long (my fingers are crossed while tiping, I mean, anything that can help, I'm willing to try!).

Yesterday was hard... Today I decided, that if I couldn't work in the garden, at least I could dream... (So if you're not fluent in French, that's basically what the song above is about.)

So, let's try: what do you see here?

Voyons si vous êtes cap. Que voyez-vous ici?

IMGP2591

What are you saying? Nothing? You're so wrong. This is the future rasperry bush line! I can see them already.

Quoi? Rien du tout? Vous vous trompez. Voici la future haie de framboisiers. Moi, je les vois déjà.

Raspberry

Ok, let's try again... Bon, deuxième manche, pour vous rattraper.

IMGP2592

You were saying? A back garden full of junk? Not at all!

Que dites-vous? Un terrain vague-dépotoir? Vous n'y êtes pas du tout!

images

It's my future strawberry  field at the back and the future apple tree in front of it. By the way, the junk was my neighbour's and he was kind enough to tidy it a bit, since I want to use that back garden the previours owner didn't use except for their hens.

Let's see if you're getting any better... Voyons si vous progressez...

IMGP2593

I know it's on the tip of your tongue... Yes, it's the future herb garden!

Herb Garden

Thanks for playing with me... Seriously, I kind of feel better already...It's amazing what dreaming and talking to friends can do...

PS: All pictures are mine, except of course the beautiful ones: those come from various gardening sites both French and English (maybe also American) that I use for inspiration.

Hi everyone!

Spring is slowly settling in, with ups and downs, which means it's time to listen to the "Flower Festival in Genzano" (I grew up listening to this, so it just soothe me to listen to it over and over again - sorry, kind neighbours):

I keep working in the side garden, but it will take a few years before it looks like what I have in mind... But the back garden is cooperating.

  IMGP2652

IMGP2651

Aren't they welcoming?

IMGP2653

Wishing you all a nice and flowery spring.

Failte you all!

Failte à tous!

This is just a quick post to wish you all a happy Saint Patrick's Day.

IMGP0503

I went twice to Ireland and the second time was very important as I took so many life-changing decisions during that trip.

IMGP0524

Today my life owes a lot to those decisions.

IMGP0603

IMGP0533

Isn't this land magical?

IMGP0657

N'est-ce pas magique?

I made some soda bread tonight - an Irish recipe of course!

IMGP2650

Hi everyone stopping by!

I have the most unusual way to watch TV and it's bugging everyone around me... But I can't help it! I watch TV for the sets as much as for the actual shows. Do you think there's a cure for that?

So here's my latest addiction. Maybe because my mum had me redo her kitchen on the Ikea planner this week, it has to do with a kitchen...

Donc, voici ma dernière lubie...

If you're not watching The Vampire Diaries for THE eyes:

208 Rose Damon's eye

Then you should be watching it for this:

Alors, vous devriez regarder pour cette cuisine!

DTVD-113-0560

I love their white kitchen! I also love the wood counter. I don't dislike the cook, either . I know, he has such a nice back... But could you please concentrate on the kitchen? I like that it looks like a normal kitchen with lots of things on the counter, so I can picture myself in it.

102 305

They managed to put a big bookcase in the dining area, which is an idea I really find inspiring.

103 0531

The dining area: I like the mismatched chairs and hate their tablecloth. I bet the bad mood they seem in on this picture has to do with that tablecloth... They have a china cabinet on the right.

Better view of the china cabinet:

Le vaisselier :

DTVD-121-0794

Some nice open shelves:

Des étagères ouvertes bien sympas:

dtvd-105 0119

I do hope they have fired who ever suggested those curtains because I really think they kill the look:

DTVD-116-0819

The kitchen island has some shelves where I would have put my cooking books, but they didn't think of it:

DTVD-204-1108

If you had asked me a few episodes ago what I thought of white tiles in a white kitchen. I would have "phewed" you: "too much white kills the white" (or so says French people)...

DTVD-201-0015

But now I think I was just a fool and have been proved wrong.

DTVD-204-0722

This one above is just a treat for me as the combinations of whites on the ceiling, moulding and walls just make my heart miss a beat.

So, forget decoration shows, watch The Vampire Diaries! On the plus side, the actors are cute!

All pictures are from a website called "Devoted To The Vampire Diaries" where I spent hours trying to find screencaptures where the set was more visible than the actors!!!

Dearest readers,

Chers lecteurs,

Just in case you thought I was completely mad when writing my title, it's a quote from the TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the show that taught me English... It deserved to be quoted at least once.

So my days of this Winter Break are quite busy: sanding a wall upstairs in the morning, gardening in the afternoon (why is it so cold for March?) and grading papers in the evening (the grading, being the last activity of the day, doesn't go very well...). It's pretty tiring and did I mention the cold? It calls for hearty country food.

onion soup 1

onion soup 8

So here's my easy-peasy recipe for French onion soup.

a spoonful of butter

8 to 10 onions

a tablespoonful of brown sugar (because a spoonful of sugar helps...)

2 tablespoonfuls of flour

3 to 4 cups of beef stock

bread and grated cheese to serve

onion soup 7

onion soup 6

Just a little reminder of what my kitchen looks like and of why I only make easy-peasy recipes!!!

So basically, once the onions are cooked enough in the butter, add the other ingredients one by one. "Cooked enough" can change depending on your taste: some like them to get a little brownish, but I don't.

onion soup 5

onion soup 2

I almost forgot to give you my secret: when you peel and chop the onions, you might cry a little... Try to do a little dance, to hop from one foot to the other. It really helps. If you don't have children, swearing doesn't hurt...

Dear all of you patiently or impatiently waiting for spring,

You might remember my garden from a previous post and you might also remember I wrote I dreamed about a medieval garden.

So here is where I am these last days...

IMGP2531

The back of the second garden before:

IMGP2535

The fence before:

IMGP2533

The mess of the first day we began working/ Le bazar du premier jour de "jardinage":

IMGP2545

The mess it's now!

IMGP2554

We don't have the new fence yet... But it won't be the white picket fence of my dreams as it's way too long and so too expensive for me right now!!!

IMGP2552

It's really cold here for March... So I gave the gardeners something to have energy...

groseillers avant 3

I got rid of the whole hedge that was on the South side, except for the four red currant bushes that were there but were a real mess as you can see above.

So an hour and the hell of a backache later, they looked like this:

If you look closely, the first buds are there!!

The gardeners also found two gooseberry bushes in the middle of the mess and so I replanted them.

Shadow is checking my work.

Shadow checking

Don't worry about that leash he has, it's not linked to anything, but it allows me to know where he is as there is no fence anymore and he lost his habits, again! Also, the neighbour's dog tend to come in the garden because of the lack of fence and they don't love each other, so I just pull the leash to save my cat rather than risking to get bitten by the dog!!!!

cognassier du japon 2

Something else we found in the mess of the back garden and I decided to save. I guess it's called "Japonica" or so says my dictionary....

We cut the mimosa as unfortunately nothing was growing under it. It was a hard decision to make and everybody told me different things about it, so I've pretty much heard it all, even the meanest things!!!

Still, I didn't want to waste all the flowers so I made bouquets for all my neighbours...

IMGP2541

And I decorated the veranda with a very unusual for me yellow theme.

IMGP2540

This decor has already evolved since I took the picture, but anyway...

IMGP2548

It will propably take years for the garden to be my dream medieval garden, but I'm a constant gardener, so I'll make it work somehow someday... I'll keep you updated...

I'm linking with this parties I'm always excited about:

It's definitely a transformation, even if it's not completed, so:

Bonjour mes jolies,

(I don't need to translate that now, do I? Everybody understands a compliment!)

So first, if the title just doesn't mean anything, blame Ziva, on NCIS: she's the one who taught me that idiom.

You might remember that I have plans to change my downstair floor next summer. Well, this will also emply to change something with the dining-room wall:

Now, I realise those tulips don't seem to have felt very well the day I took the picture!

On the other side, of course, I'll also say good-bye to the kitchen wall that's on the other side:

L'autre côté:

mur cuisine 2

This wall means that right now I have to go into the living-room to bring something from the kitchen to the dining-room, see why this is driving me up the wall?

It's not that the previous owners were stupid, though. That dining-room used to be their master bedroom... My family and friends thought that I would transform it into my home office... But actually I hate having my home office in a separate room as I often have to work late at home: I tried it for one year and I had the feeling I spent the year locked up in this room! So I have my home office in a part of the living-room. Also, the first time I visited I had that idea to open the wall between the then bedroom and the kitchen... How? That is the question! That's also why I kept that orange wallpaper : I actually draw on it different ideas I have of openings...

So, first let me clear something about the size of an old fisherman's cottage: the kitchen and the dining-room reunited are probably the size of your bathroom if you leave in some part of the new worlds (meaning USA, Canada and Australia)... So I don't want two tables : anyway, you can't eat on two tables at the same time so what's the point?

Charmed204 102

Let's go idea-hunting with Phoebe and Prue (the Halliwell Manor is often inspiring to me, who found most of my ideas on TV until I discovered blogland...)

Idea #1. Fully open with kitchen island, also used as a table.

Charmed104 399

This idea seems to be used so often in decoration TV shows in France, that I had to write about it, but I never ever thought about it.... I love having a real table too much!

Idea #2. Real table but with a fully open kitchen.

Charmed104 243

I love their table. But how would I hide the boiler that's in the kitchen?

Idea #3. A door between the kitchen and the dining-room.A bit too uptight, according to me...

Manor-s-dining-room-piper-halliwell-8509451-542-534

I've thought about those three ideas and none seemed completely perfect. I can't believe the Manor has failed me!!!

So I digged some more...But that's an other story, one I don't want to tell you now as I don't want you to be influenced, because I'm sure you have ideas... Please tell me in the comments: you can put links, I'll be sure to visit them all...

Dear guests,

Chers invités,

Would you like some tea?

Que diriez-vous d'une tasse de thé?

IMGP2503

Yes?

Vous êtes tenté?

IMGP2518

I apologize for the lack of light, but besides what the weather forecast lady said yesterday on TV, we're having a really cloudy day and the flash made even more awful pictures! Besides, the fact that the dining-room is still to be redone means I work with three dark orange walls and a dark brown one: it doesn't help!!! I tried not to show too much of the walls on the pictures, but I sometimes failed!!!

My first idea was to go for a very "white themed" tea and as I went to the florist, having in mind to buy white tulips, I completely fell in love with these roses:

IMGP2507

So I changed my mind and went all white and pink instead...

IMGP2506

Do you have a sweet tooth?

IMGP2499

I'm sorry to admit that the macarons are not homemade... I don't work on Wednesdays so I was suppose to have time to cook. But yesterday I was called for a new job (my current job will be over in a few days) and I had to go visit the new school, meet the staff and all: I couldn't tell the principal "Sorry I can't come, I have to make sandwishes for a blogland tea party", could I?

Anyway, the macarons are from a lovely shop in Saint-Brieuc, where I stopped on my way back from the new school!

IMGP2497

The light pink ones are filled with rose petal jam... I wish you could taste them!

IMGP2516

IMGP2522

Strawberry macaron...

Yesterday evening, I had time to cook those little cakes, filled with raspberry jam...

IMGP2520

I had invited over a lovely lady, whose blog you can visit here, but she had to cancel for very good reason, so it's only a rain check...

But I wasn't alone for that tea party after all...

IMGP2491

IMGP2496

How Alice In Wonderland, don't you think?

IMGP2495

Dear readers, I was so happy to have you over for that tea party!

Dear readers,

Chers lecteurs,

Here's the last episode of my former home redo. But I sure hope there'll be a spin-off.

Kitchen first picture

Welcome to the dark side of the sixties!

Here's what the kitchen looked like when I visited the flat for the first time. Nice yellow tiles, huh? And the light fixture, don't get me started on that!

L'horreur, hein?

A few month later, taken from the other side...

Etape un, quelques mois plus tard...

Kitchen 2

I couldn't get rid of the awful formica kitchen cabinets (translation for "formica" welcomed in the comments!) right away as money was a bit tight... But, can you see a man's jacket on the chair? It actually belongs to the wonderful music-loving man who was going to save me from all that formica hell!

And after!

Cuisine 1

Again, I can't believe I didn't take more pictures... I couldn't find any picture of the open shelves that were on the other wall... It's stupid, since I loved that kitchen (my first "big" kitchen, even if it looks small to you) so much, that I could stand with my cup of tea, watching it for long minutes!

For some reason, all my friends thought it looked very English. Any idea why?

Now that I'm back to an awful kitchen with no cabinets, no real oven and worse than anything else no gas stove, I miss that kitchen so much...

I'm joining wonderful parties, which allowed me lately to virtually meet real nice people. Also, the buttons are so pretty, I just want them on my post!

Hi!

Bonjour à tous!

First, I'd like to thank all the people who left very nice comments about my garden: I felt like it was Christmas again when I read them! So please, make my day, leave comments again!!!

As a very young teacher I had a job in a very difficult Parisian suburb. If you've seen the BBC documentary that was shot in Montfermeil after the 2005 winter riots, well that's the town I was working in. Not every day was a bad day: there were also good times with the pupils, but on the whole it was rather stressful and the area was always on the verge of violence. I spent the first days crying and then I thought, "So this is your life for now, so make the best of it: when life gives you lemons...". I looked for a place to live in and decided to transform it into my heaven.

Did I say heaven? Well, when I first visited, it looked like that:

Douillet?

Very old grey carpet, yellowish walls... My mother told me later she thought I was crazy...

Before Living room 2

My idea was to make something very peaceful with pink accents as I love pink and it seemed to me the prefect way to balance the violence I had to face every day. My home had to be the exact opposite of what I had at work.

Again, sorry it's not a real "after" picture with everything clean and in order as it never occured to me this would be useful. This picture was taken right before I moved out of the flat (you can see boxes on the left and on the shelves), because suddenly when I realised I was moving I wanted to have pictures of the place. The main room was a living-room/dining-room/home office! For some reason, the chairs seemed to have disapear, I don't remember why!

I used the shelf above the heater to do "mantel decorations". I think the paper on the table is the paper I had signed when I sold the flat, hence the picture frenzy of that day.

The main room was a pale beige but the "hall" and "corridor" (they were so small they barely deserve these names) were "vieux rose", meaning a dark faded pink to match the curtains... I couldn't find a nice picture to show you the colour, but there's this picture of Shadow playing hide and seek, where you can see a glimpse of the corridor and of the bathroom...

I had changed all the door handles as it was a quick and cheap way to give a little country look to a flat located in a big city!

I don't have a before of the bedroom, but it looked a lot like the living-room: old grey carpet, yellow and blue wallpaper.

I had really wanted that wallpaper, hoping flowers would bring something very girly and non-violent in the room... It was really a nice room to sleep in. The curtains were brought here for the same purpose as they were my curtains at my parents' when I was a child: I had removed them as a teenager ("I'm way over pink", I thought) and suddenly when I had to work far from my family, I had the need to keep something from my childhood.

I think it was exactly the decoration I needed at the time. I still love that shade of faded pink, but now that I live in much more peaceful area, I don't have the same craving for it. Does the place you live influence your decoration as well?

Maybe I would do some things differently but at the time I was only doing things with my "guts": I had never ever opened a decoration magazine, or watch a decoration show on TV, or read a decoration blog! My friends, though, began calling the flat "the Cottage" and thought it had a very special "vibe"... And that's how I started to realise decoration was important to me.

In the next episode: the kitchen redo!!!

Dans le prochain episode: la cuisine!!!

Comments, not too mean if possible, would be very much appreciated!
