On our last day of school, it was snowing (yes, again!) pretty bad when I drove back home, so rather than waiting for the next day, I stopped on my way home to buy a tree. I mean, we could have been stuck at home all weekend! Actually, this time, we just had an inch of snow...

And tadaam!

Et voilà!

IMGP2257

By night...

IMGP2230

It's quite tiny as a) it had to fit in my tiny car; b) I had to carry it on my own; c) I didn't want to buy new ornaments as I have more important house-related things to spend on.

Also, it tends to lean on the right but that's because a) it's natural; b) we had a little cat-cident yesterday!!!

IMGP2242

IMGP2259

There is nothing glittery in it... Nearly everything is made of fabric or wood or paper... No plastic in my tree, please.

IMGP2264

All these ornaments I bought years ago when I lived in an apartment in the Parisian suburbs and had decorated it "cottage style" (I just didn't know it was called that at the time).

IMGP2266

I was already fond of hearts!!! It wasn't in fashion yet!!!

Tiens, j'étais déjà fan des coeurs!

IMGP2263

The only "expensive" ornament I own is this litlle angel-ballet dancer that I bought in Quebec some ten years ago (gosh, so long ago? - it seems like yesterday as I remember perfectly well the shop...)

IMGP2244

OK, I lied about the "not buying anything new this year"... I couldn't resist two too cute teddy bears.... The one above and the one below!

IMGP2265

IMGP2258

Thanks to everyone who stops by... I apologize for all the mistakes you might (will?) find both in English and French... I'm trying my best!

Wishing you all a very merry (and snowy) Christmas,

Hi everyone!

Sarah, from the wonderful Modern Country Style, told me about a carol I didn't know about yet, but I really enjoyed discovering it.

I'm pretty tired as the end of the year is always full of staff meetings and also I hate driving at night, but days are so short.
I will put up the Christmas tree as usual Friday evening on my first day of Christmas break... But as today is Saint Lucy's day, I thought I could share with you some candle light...

IMGP2211
Of course the tea is deliciously spiced Christmas tea!
And this still on my "faux" coffee table as I haven't found "the one" yet!

PS: I'm trying to create a "follow me" button... But it's a work in progress, as I'm not sure how it works!!! I'm also going to try to have it in both French and English... Wish me luck!

Hi everyone! Thanks for stopping by.

I so wanted to be part of The Lettered Cottage party! But what are you saying? I don't have a mantel? I'm stuck at home because of a severe snow fall and can't go out shopping? Nevermind! I'll do with what I have at home and in the garden... I know it's not half as pretty as all the posts I've been reading for two days... But it was made with love...

From this:

On est donc parti de ça:

IMGP2065

To this:

Et on en est là:

IMGP2116

It's just a couple knickknack I already had, but it gives the entrance of the house some Christmas spirit.

IMGP2118

The wreath is made of ivy, which isn't very Christmas-y... But it's what I found in the garden, and it was very difficult to draw it from the wall as it was frozen and kept cutting.

At night:

IMGP2165

I'm obviously linking this post to The Lettered Cottage... And remember folks, don't be to hard on me... It's just a work in progress...

I like visiting  decorating (cottage style mostly) blogs during my morning coffee break (which happens only on days when I don't work). I am always amazed at all the work people do in their houses every week... I was a bit jealous... I still am, but now I'm only jealous of the wonderful ideas they have and of their great taste... I'm no longer jealous of the pace of their renovations. I'm all alone and I have a job, a job I love by the way, so I don't have much time for my house between September and June... I'll just go my own pace... "Doucement, mais sûrement"!

I'll post about all these inspiring blogs during the winter...

Here is an hymn that  always comes to my mind when hearing/writing/thinking of the words "Welcome Home". Not the best recording, but the only one I could put on the blog...

Here is one of the very little transformations I was able to do before winter.

In front of the front door of the house, there is a tiny veranda that is really typical of the French fifties or maybe forties (I will try to find the date of birth of my house someday). It is really old and people before me didn't show a lot of TLC for this veranda, so it looks a bit sick. I have ideas to change it, but I don't have the money right now, as my money is kept for an other project I will tell you about later on... Still, without changing it yet, I just added a few things to make it more welcoming for my guest and for me when I come back from work every afternoon. Here the before:

IMGP1627

On the veranda, the previous owners had put a canopy (or "marquise" in French, it's one of those times when I like the French word better!)... But it was made of plastic (doesn't really show on the picture, does it?)!!! And plastic just doesn't go with my cottage style. I don't know if you notice that awful rug they left me?

Well I removed the "marquise" and the rug.

Before:

IMGP1692

And after I went shopping:

IMGP1693

It just changes the atmosphere, doesn't it?

Then in the town I worked in last year, there used to be a lovely shop where you could have tea and find ideas for your garden (it's now closed, though)... And as I was wandering around one day during lunch break, i found this little bell...

IMGP1696

When I took a friend at the end of the summer to visit the medieval town of Dinan, I found an other shop closing with everything on sale, including this:

IMGP1937

So here is my front door as it looks now:

IMGP1935

On the little heart-shaped chalkboard, I wrote the name of the house on one side and "I'm in the garden" on the other side, so that people know where to find me if I'm not answering when they ring the bell!

It's just an "in between" look, really, as I have more radical projects for it... But, I need time to think things through properly... Right, now, I'm thinking a lot about that picture of Beatrix Potter in front of her house...http://www.mirefoot.co.uk/images/Beatrix_Potter/beatrix_potter_hill_top.jpg

I'd like to have that kind of roofshape on top of my little veranda in the future... One can dream!

Even though this isn't really a big transformation, I'm linking this post to transformation Thursday, just for th fun of it! And for some reason I can't undo the bold writing!!!

I wanted to transform the upstairs toilets during my Hallowe'en break, but instead I got 3 wonderful friends and a baby at home. It was really great, especially the fact that the baby discovered the sea (and chocolate!) while here!!!

On the plus side, I get more time to think about what I want to do upstairs... Oh, and also, they gave me really cute heartshaped dishes. It was blind luck apparently, as none of them knew I had moved to a "heart phase". (I tend to love things shaped as a heart nowadays).

IMGP2050

Here they are, filled with a seafood pie. But, since then, I also baked a great meringue triffle in them. Everything tastes better when heartshaped!!!

So the only new project so far is to get rid of the rope that was in the staircase.

Before:

IMGP1649

After:

IMGP1651

I know, it looks like it took five seconds! Atually it took for ever since a) the rope had about four nails a stair; b) the rope was so dusty, the dust was like glued to the wood underneath and I had to wash it with a toothbrush so I could get to the corners!

Also when my friend's baby was there, I finally understood why the bottom stairs look so much more older than the upstairs ones!!! Generations of babies trying to go up and stopping at the third stair!!!

Later, I would like to repaint the staircase for right now there are three different walls!!! Again harmony is nowhere in the house!!!

Yesterday, I was surprised to see kids come "treat or tricking" the house: I quickly put my witch dress and hat on and it was a lot of fun to wait for them and see their face when they discovered my lighted Jack O'Lantern and black dress!

I never ever decorated my house for Hallowe'en. But two weekends ago, we had the rainiest Sunday ever, a colleague of mine had talked about the Hallowe'en decoration she wanted her pupils to make, and off I went gathering things that seemed Halloweeny to me. I didn't buy anything special except for the Jack O'lantern... I'm so clumsy I thought I might loose a finger if I tried carving a pumpkin by myself. It's all very small and simple.

IMGP1994

The hazelnuts in the small orange bowls are from my garden, the smallest squash (called "potimarron", couldn't find an English name for it) comes from my mother's.

I wish I could have a mantelpiece to ornate, but I don't, so it's in the small porch (on that cupboard I hate and will violently destroy one day) and it's great to look at these fall colors when I come back home.  It's the only time of the year I can bear orange! Still, I had a hard time finding flowers to put in the bucket that didn't look too orange.

As most of the décor is edible, it tends to evolve with time... So here is what it looks like today (some pieces were eaten, some were bought at the local market!)

IMGP1998

Do you notice how sunny today is? We are so lucky to have such a nice fall.

I've been very busy lately that's why nothing happened much on the blog... But I might get an extra vacation if the gas shortage still goes on here... At one point I just won't be able to go to work anymore!

I know corridor is such a long word for such a tiny area of the house... But it's right in front of my bedroom and I couldn't stand to go to sleep waking through this:

IMGP1898

So here is what it looks like now:

IMGP1969

It was hardwork to get the burgundy to come back to white. The walls are painted a slightly darker shade of white. I really like the light there is in that small space now... And as you notice I still have to do the landing, which is painted with various shades of yellow and orange.

From an other angle, before:               Vu d'un autre angle, avant:

IMGP1659

After: Après:

IMGP1972

This was my first big painting job: I'm aware that there are many mistakes... But practice makes perfect! It's a good thing I didn't choose the living-room as my first project!

If shades of white inspire you, you might want to have a look at those two blogs.

Here is project #2 completed. Upstairs, the floor was just chaos! There was a fake woodfloor in the guest room and in the bathroom (but not the same, of course!), navy blue carpet in the main bedroom, a blueish thing in the toilets and an Arlequin-style yellow and orange carpet in the corridor. You don't believe me, do you? The proof is in the pictures!

IMGP1637

Blue carpet in the main room...

IMGP1618

Like, the floor is the only problem!!!

IMGP1669

According to the previous owner, it was cheerful!!!

Of course, I dreamed, and still dream, of hardwood floor... But it's way beyond what I can pay right now. Still, I just couldn't adjust to all the colors and I decided to go for a cheap makeover for now.

Here is the corridor now:

IMGP1674

It's a natural product (just learned from the blog A Perfect Gray that  it's called  seagrass!), meaning color will slightly change with time, which is an idea I like. Also, I chose not to glue it to  the floor, so it will be easier to remove when I have money for my dream hardwood floor! The glue is also highly chemical and then, what's the benefit of choosing a natural floor?

The atmsophere upstairs is just so much more peaceful already, even if the walls remain very, very, very colorful!

IMGP1675

I will deal with those walls later, promise!

A friend asked me recently if I had done anything with the house yet or rather as she put it if I had "undone" anything. It's a work in progress and I need time... But, even before I had my bed in the room, I needed to undo something.  This was my very first (and "very number one") project. Have you guessed? Do you remember that wall?

IMGP1621

I had never held a brush or anything before, but I thought "What the ...? I can't do worse, now, can I?"

So here I am at work...

IMGP1681

Mylène, if you read that post, these are the old jeans you wanted me to throw away. They are actually very useful!!!

I chose to have that wall white because a) the room is already very colorful (pink, grey and yellow, yeah, I know, yuck!) and b) there was no way I would find the exact same yellow or same grey...

So, this is my first before/after:

IMGP1683

Tadam!

I shouldn't say it really, but actually, it's not as perfect as the picture shows it: you can still slightly see the green leaves... But, I will redo it when I know what I'll do with the room.

The cottage style is slowly creeping in the Little White House, regardless of the awful previous owners paintings...

IMGP1943

Sweet dreams to you all,

I suffer right now from a very severe furniture shortage. So my mom brought me everything she could, meaning two awful kitchen stool that used to belong to my father's mother. Here they are:

one green:

IMGP1793

and one orange (did I already mention I hate orange?):

IMGP1901

I had never painted a piece of furniture before, but I couldn't stand to put those in my already too colorful house. So I bought paint, brush and I rolled up my sleeves. And here is what they look like now.

IMGP1804

And by the way, this is not a stool anymore: it got upgraded to "under-the-printer" table... So the printer isn't on the floor anymore!

IMGP1925

For the second one, I got bolder and painted roses to hide a stain that wouldn't go away after three coats of white! It's now a bedside table for the guest bedroom which actually still doesn't have a proper bed, but none of the friends who visited this summer dared to complain!
